Born to Robert Fleming (1785-1867) and Mary Polly Watson (1790-1847) on 10 Apr 1836 in Harris, Georgia.
Marriage and Children
She married Jacob Kelley III in Coffee Co., Alabama around 1854.
They had six children:
Robert Warren 1857-1942
George W. 1859-1925
Francis Lafayette 1859-1929
Thomas Jefferson "Jeff" 1862-1933
Jeff was known as one of the pioneers of the Texas panhandle and one of the oldest settlers of Collingsworth County. The schoolhouse in Collingsworth County was named for Kelley. (information from "A History of Texas and Texans" (Vol. 5 pgs. 2451-2453) by Frank White Johnson (1916)
Lewis 1864-1870
Move to Texas
At the age of 28 and after her spouse, Jacob Kelley, died in the Civil War at the Camp Chase Prison Camp in Ohio she moved to Texas. She moved with her children who ranged in age from 1-9. According to an article on the history of Collingsworth County Texas she did this by boat to Galveston and then by ox wagon to Caldwell County, TX.
In the 1870 census in Caldwell County Texas, she is found to be living with a R.H. Fleming age 23, who is a nephew of Mary's. I believe this is her brother Issac's son, Robert H. Fleming (or Henry Robert Fleming). By 1880, her nephew is back in Alabama. Perhaps she left Alabama because there was family in TX that could be a support after Jacob died.
Remarried
On 2 Nov 1871, and at the age of 35, she married her 2nd spouse Johannes (Jon) W Hurst (1819-1886). They had three children:
Martin Luther (1872-1969)
Lula M (1874-1904)
John W
She was living with her daughter, Lula, and her spouse, Oliver Shook, in Bastrop, County in 1900.
She was living with one of her sons, Francis Lafayette or Robert Warren in Throckmorton, TX where she died and was buried in 1909.
Daughter - Chloe Ann
Chloe Ann, daughter of Mary Fleming Kelley and Jacob Kelley III, was born 02 Jan 1856 in Coffee County, Alabama. When she was about 9 years old she arrived in Texas with her mother and siblings. From the History of Texas and Texans Vol. 5 book it stated that this "little family lived on a rented farm and were in rather poor circumstances."
Marriage and Children
Chloe Ann married Phillip Penn Jenkins (1847-1924) in Whitney, TX on 07 Jun 1874.
They had 11 children:
Henry Eugene 1875-1959
Ada Mae 1877-1950 (panhandle)
Robert E Lee 1880-1907
Ricy Bertha 1882-1908
Notley Warren 1884-1885
Newton Jacob 1885-1918
Andrew Arthur 1889-1932
Ernest Marshall 1892-1970

Maude Lavora 1899-1990
Chloe's brother, Thomas Jefferson, lived and worked for a year on Phillip Penn's ranch/farm prior to moving on to the Panhandle of Texas.
After her daughter-in-law, Iberia Agnes, who was married to Andrew Arthur died (1917) she raised their child, Dora Agnes. Andrew was in the Navy from 25 May 1917 through 4 Jun 1919.
Becomes A Widow
Phillip Penn dies in 1924 when Chloe is 68. After his death, she and Dora moved in with her son, Ernest. At some point she also lives with her daughter, Maude, according to the 1940 census. However, she passes in Mathis, San Patricio, Texas where her daughter, Ester Lena is living. This daughter also signs the death certificate as the informant. Chloe dies at the age of 85 on 02 Jul 1941.
